Sani Pass & the Edge of the World

Sani Pass & The Edge of the World is an overnight tour over the top of the mountain and underneath a blanket of stars in Lesotho in the evening.

Built in 1950 as a bridle path, what the Sani Pass  takes out of you in the challenge of adventure, it gives back in scenery.

As the altitude increases, the road becomes narrower and more treacherous. All signs of human habitation disappear and you come face to face with the vast, desolate beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains.

The road is made of gravel, and at elevations ranging from 1544m to 2876m at the summit.

How long is the tour?

The tour is 2 days and one night.

As this is a private tour you can request the time of return but the border control closes at 18h00 by which time we need to be back in South Africa.

What is the altitude?

The Sani Pass is at an elevation of 2873 meters above sea level.

Black Mountain Pass which is towards the village you will visit is at an elevation of 3278 meters above sea level.

There has not been a case of altitude sickness but our guides are trained to watch for signs and have a back up in place should this occur.

Is the Pass going to be tarred?

Yes.  However according to the engineers involved this will only be in about 5 years.

There are a few road works but this is long before the South African border post.

Can I drive on my own?

Some do attempt to do this but unless you are very experienced it is not advisable.  Inclement weather conditions are dangerous if you do not know the road and can happen at any time even if it looks good in the morning.

You will not get to see Basotho culture as this is only provided through a guided tour and your views will be restricted if you do not have the freedom to watch as you pass. You will  not be able to go to any of the private accommodation mentioned.

You can however ‘Hire a Guide’ provided you have the correct vehicle the guide will accompany you in your vehicle to ensure that you get to the top and will take you to the village for the activities at a small cost. The guide will spend the night with you and return with you the next day.  The cost for this is R1100 per day.

Rental vehicles are not suggested as rental companies will charge for damage in the area even with full cover insurance.

You dictate your preferences in terms of time.

Our only restrictions are the South African border control closes at 18h00

and therefore we need to be back in South Africa prior to this time.
