Description

Sani Pass & Lesotho Stars

Sani Pass & Lesotho Stars Overnight Adventure

Discover the Heart of Lesotho in Just Two Days

Journey beyond the ordinary on this unforgettable two-day adventure that reveals the true spirit of Lesotho. Travel up the legendary Sani Pass, a route originally carved out as a bridle path in the 1950s. What it demands in daring, it rewards tenfold in breathtaking scenery.

As you climb higher, the road narrows and the world falls away. Human traces fade, replaced by the dramatic, untouched beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains — rugged cliffs, vast valleys, and endless skies. The gravel pass winds from 1,544m to 2,876m, each turn offering a new perspective on this wild landscape.

Once over the summit, you’ll venture deep into the mountains to visit a remote village, where you’ll meet a traditional healer and experience the warmth of Lesotho’s mountain people. Choose your pace — hike, horse ride, or simply sit back and soak in the scenery.

Your evening is spent in a charming mountain guesthouse — a place steeped in history, said to be where kings were once born. As night falls, dine on hearty local cuisine, share stories over drinks, and gaze at a sky ablaze with stars before drifting into a peaceful sleep.

Wake up to crisp mountain air and panoramic views, ready for more outdoor exploration before the journey back down the pass.

Adventure, culture, and natural beauty — all in one remarkable overnight escape.

How long is the tour?

The tour is 2 days and one night.

As this is a private tour you can request the time of return but the border control closes at 18h00 by which time we need to be back in South Africa.

What happens if the weather is bad?

When it is raining, misty or snowing we still operate the tour as most times you rise above the clouds as you go up the Pass.

The only times when the tour will be cancelled is if the Pass has been closed by the border control due to being blocked by snow.

Please speak to us about cancelling if you are not happy.

What is the altitude?

The Sani Pass is at an elevation of 2873 meters above sea level.

Black Mountain Pass which is towards the village you will visit is at an elevation of 3278 meters above sea level.

There has not been a case of altitude sickness but our guides are trained to watch for signs and have a back up in place should this occur.

Is the Pass going to be tarred?

Yes.  However according to the engineers involved this will only be in about 5 years.

There are a few road works but this is long before the South African border post.

Can I drive on my own?

Some do attempt to do this but unless you are very experienced it is not advisable.  Inclement weather conditions are dangerous if you do not know the road and can happen at any time even if it looks good in the morning.

You will not get to see Basotho culture as this is only provided through a guided tour and your views will be restricted if you do not have the freedom to watch as you pass. You will  not be able to go to any of the private accommodation mentioned.

You can however ‘Hire a Guide’ provided you have the correct vehicle the guide will accompany you in your vehicle to ensure that you get to the top and will take you to the village for the activities at a small cost. The guide will spend the night with you and return with you the next day.  The cost for this is R1100 per day.

Rental vehicles are not suggested as rental companies will charge for damage in the area even with full cover insurance.
